There are now more Hispanics of Puerto Rican origin living in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia (4.6 million in 2010) than there are living in Puerto Rico (3.7 million), and Census Bureau data show there are notable differences between the two groups, according to a report from the Pew Hispanic Center. The recently released report, “A Demographic Portrait of Puerto Ricans, 2009,” used population counts from the 2010 Census and information about population characteristics from the American Community Survey.
According to the report, Hispanics of Puerto Rican origin living on the island have an older median age than those living in the 50 states and D.C.; they are more likely to hold a college degree or own a home than are Hispanics of Puerto Rican origin in the 50 states and D.C.; but their median earnings are lower and they are more likely to live in poverty than Hispanics of Puerto Rican origin living in the 50 states and D.C.
