Americans’ top descriptions of the current state of politics
Majorities of Americans say partisan fighting gets too much attention, while issues and policy get too little
Most Americans are critical of the role of money in politics; 72% favor limits on political spending
Since the mid-1990s, the share of Americans with unfavorable views of both parties has more than quadrupled
Many Americans are open to having more parties; about a quarter say it would make it easier to solve problems
Broad public support for term limits for Congress, age limits for federal elected officials and Supreme Court
Democrats worry that personal rights may vary by state, Republicans that the federal government is doing too much on issues better left to the states
