8. The changing demographic composition of voters and party coalitions
Both parties grow more racially and ethnically diverse – but changes are larger for the Democratic Party
Voters have gotten older since the 1990s, but the change is particularly evident in the GOP
Share of Democratic voters with bachelor’s degrees has roughly doubled since 1990s; less change in the educational profile among Republican voters
White voters without a bachelor’s degree make up about half of GOP voters and about a quarter of Democratic voters
Declining shares of voters are Christian in both party coalitions, but the change is much more pronounced in the Democratic Party than the GOP
GOP coalition is majority conservative, while Democrats are split between liberals and moderates
