Ever since the Obama administration signaled a “Pivot to Asia” in 2011, Europeans have worried about the future of the transatlantic relationship. Donald Trump’s disparaging comments about NATO only stoked European anxiety about Americans’ commitment to Europe.
A new Pew Research Center survey suggests Europe can breathe more easily. The Continent has returned as a focal point in American foreign policy, and there continues to be popular support for NATO and the EU among Americans. In 2011, Americans considered Asian nations (47 percent) to be more important to the U.S. than European countries (37 percent). Today, 52 percent name Europe, while just 32 percent cite Asia. Support for Europe is at its highest since the question was first asked in 1993.
