Americans, across party lines, would rather take military action against Iran to prevent that country from obtaining nuclear weapons than avoid war with the Middle Eastern country. Fully 61% of Americans say preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon is more important than avoiding military conflict with a nuclear-armed Iran. Only 24% of Americans say avoiding military conflict is more important. Support for military action in the face of a nuclear Iran includes 71% of Republicans, 51% of Democrats and 66% of independents. Large majorities of Americans also support tougher international sanctions and direct negotiations with Iran over the issue of its nuclear program, but similar majorities do not believe such approaches would be successful.
